Date/Month or Month/Date?

There's no fixed way to put down the date/month/ year.
It was last night I needed to write a report to my customer at 4 am, so I started writing a report in my vague memory of what day the day was. I had a quick look at my cellular as was usual. I don't carry a wristwatch. I saw 4/9/05. I undersood it was April 9th 2005 then I wrote down April 8th 2005, I needed to write it one day earlier than that day.
Oh, today was an entrance day for highschools, eh? really?
Is it only me who feels confused around equinox of autumnal and vernal days or weeks? Anyway the temparature is very alike.

For two reasons, I prefer YYYY-MM-DD. 1) My co-workers, upon seeing a date number 2005-09-05, can naturally figure out that if the biggest unit comes first, then the smallest unit must come last. 2) I used to be a computer programmer, and if you store dates in this format, a 'sort' operation on them puts them in the right order without extra work. It does mean that you must include the leading zeros on the month and day (i.e. 2005-09-05 instead of 2005-9-5). Without the leading zero, The sort order would be January, October, November, December, then February. Oof.

It is important to have a general rule how to put those numbers in the right order, everybody agrees YYYY-MM-DD is one of the reasonable ways and I myself prefer.
The problem is, for example, when they put year last, 04/09/2005 or 09/04/2005 that means April the 9th or September the 4th. Sometimes confusing. If they put only two digits of the year, that make matters worse. 04/09/05 means what? Some say 2004/Sep/05, 04/Sep/2005, or April/09/2005. But nobody would not dare to say that 2004/09/May, so YYYY/MM/DD is prefarable.
As for me, in order to avoid undesirable confusion, in my notebooks, I make it a rule to write down like 04/Sep/2005. But I have to write it all in figures, as you pointed out, 2005/09/04 is the best way.--Ancient Greek Philosophers -18c Enlightenment Thinkers -Slashdotters
